Write more words.
I’d like to write more, and I’d like to improve what I write. This is where I’ll be infrequently working on these two goals.
In my other life, I run my own business. It’s satisfying and it’s fairly flexible, which allows me to eke out a second existence as a part-time student at The University of Glasgow. I study Classics and I’m particularly interested in Greek tragedy, Homer, Latin (which I started learning in 2016), Homer, Virgil, and Ovid. I completed two years of philosophy at Glasgow and I wish I was better at it.
Aside from these two subjects, I enjoy reading general history and fiction. Recent obsessions include Levi and Rhodes; authors I’ve enjoyed recently, of whose books I own more than three, are Fitzgerald, Steinbeck, Naipaul, Tolstoy, and I’m hoping to start a run-through of the Shakespeare tragedies soon. (UPDATE: Recent authors – Proust, Harold Bloom, Vernant and Vidal-Naquet.
My favourite novel of all time is War and Peace, but it used to be Crime and Punishment. Before that, it was The Grapes of Wrath and before that, Jude the Obscure. Or possibly On the Road. Moby Dick should be in there, somewhere.
I’m a husband to Shona, who has made me a far better man than I used to be; and daddy to Maya Iliana Alexandra – the best person in the world – whose favourite book is The Highway Rat.
Let’s see how this goes.
SAL.
